Define "Appropriate"

So I find it funny what people define as "appropriate".  Movies and Video Games have a rating system that say what is "appropriate" for different ages... but who gets to decide that?

The other day, a friend on facebook posted a video of him DJing a church dance.  His video posed the question, "Do you feel this song is appropriate?"... "Well 299 youth didn't think so".  Apparently, a couple of the youth at this dance didn't think the song was appropriate.

The song was "Turn Down For What"...

So... I guess what they defined as "appropriate" is "if the youth like it, then it's ok."... ya... I don't think so.

For those few that stood alone in saying it was NOT appropriate... I say good job!

According to the church handbook, the song they used is NOT appropriate from the lyrics alone.

Let us not be afraid to "stand alone" with what we know to be "appropriate" even if no one else is doing it.

What do you think is "appropriate"?

  1. I sometimes feel conflicted in my opinions of what is or isn't appropriate...for those who aren't aware of the lyrics (which is what, 70% of the youth), I could see how they wouldn't think it's inappropriate. But, playing inappropriate lyrics isn't fair to the 30% to those who do understand/know the lyrics. And then, playing inappropriate music may make others think you endorse the words/behavior/content and so that's no good. But ignorance is bliss, right?! Ok, I know better than to say that after taking this class, but the idea is sure nice. I don't like the idea of telling others what they should or shouldn't do/watch/listen to etc. because I hate it when others do that to me...is that irresponsible or cowardly of me to admit?

  2. Ya... I don't think we should judge others for the media content they choose to let into their lives... but for this I used the example of a song at a church dance I heard. Whoever is in charge of the church dance is supposed to make sure that none of the songs are even questionable I would think. Whether or not majority of the youth actually know the lyrics of the song is a different question. I'm just goin' off what the church handbook states... and it doesn't seem like this song would be "appropriate" according to those standards.
